ane was the daughter of Thomas Rumble and Frances Mary de Brotherton.
Her exact date of birth is not known, but she was baptised at St Pancras
Church, London, on 13 November, 1829, along with her brother John and her
sister Louisa. The June 1841 census showed her age as 12, and the March 1851
census, as 21. Thus, she was probably born between March and June 1829. The 7
April 1861 census record stated that she was 25 years of age, which would put
her birth at 1836 - but it is likely that she then lied about her age.
Jane married Henry Webb probably
in 18651. Dorothy Fall2 stated that they had a child,
Harry, and possibly others. Nothing else is known.
The entry in the Index of Wills for her sister Louisa stated that in
1877 Jane was living in London Road, Croydon.

His marriage was solemnised in the parish church of St. Martin's in the Field
in the county of Middlesex, England, on 10 February 18531. On the marriage certificate he is
described as an engineer living in Villiers Street2. Thomas
married Lydia Mary Spicer, of Barking, Essex. Her father, John Spicer, was
described by profession as "Smith." Dorothy Fall3 stated that he had four or five
children, both boys and girls, but no details are known. It also appears that
he married a second time4. The entry in the index of wills states: Rumble Thomas William - The Will of Thomas William Rumble formerly of

001A 13 004A F RUMBLE LOUISA SINGLE (1826?)
1 The above information was contained in a
1938 letter from Blanche Rumble (14008F) to Dorothy Fall (15016F) 2 Recorded for the September 1877 Quarter
in the Parish of Eastbourne, Ref. 2b 39. Her age was stated as 50. |
|
t was originally thought that Louisa was the daughter of Thomas Rumble
& Frances Mary de Brotherton, and that she became blind and deaf, and
never married1. Deduction from the 1841 and 1851 census records indicates that she was
born between March and June 1826. (However the census record of 7 April 1861
states her age as 27 years, which would put her birth in 1834. It is likely
that in 1861 she lied about her age as this does not tally with her baptism
at St. Pancras church, London on 13 November 1829. As Thomas Rumble and
Frances de Brotherton did not marry until March 1828, it is possible that
Louisa was a daughter of Thomas by his first marriage. However, she was
buried in the same grave at Reading cemetery as Thomas Rumble and Frances
Mary Brotherton. Louisa died at Croydon on 18 July 18772. The entry in the Index of Wills states: Rumble, Louisa late of 1 Oak Villas Derby Road Croydon in the County

nthony, the fifth child of Valentine & Elizabeth Knight was born
in London on 24 October, 1831. On 1 August 1861 he married Letitia Hochee, at
Lingfield, England. He died on 25 May 1912. The London Records Office1
lists Letitia and Anthony's marriage listed twice, as follows: [1] Marylebone Parish October-December quarter 1860,
Reference 1a 642 [2] East Grinstead Parish July-September quarter
1861 Reference 2b 149. We do not know the reason for the two records. Sydney Poole Lowdell2
had a substantial home with a private chapel at East Grinstead. It is
possible that they were married legally in 1860, and followed this with a
family wedding in the private family chapel, so it was recorded again in
E.Grinstead. This is merely conjecture. Anthony and Letitia had six children: Valentine Elphinstone, Fred,
Kate Rosaline, Henry St.John, Mary and Churchill. In 1989, Brenda Rohl visited Anthony's grave at Charlton cemetery,
Greenwich, England. She stated: The grave has three people and looks quite expensive (it's made of
mottled brown marble with a large square cross, total height 6 feet)
'Valentine Elphinstone Knight, B.22/11/1862, D. 12/3/1904', 'Anthony Knight
B.24/10/1831, D.25/5/1912. Perfect Love Casteth out fear', 'Letitia Charlotte
Knight, B.15/10/1834, D. 9/7/1920'. A small marble cross with "from Katie"3 written
on, was on the plinth. The cross appears to have been moved4 for
the addition of Anthony's name and again for Letitia. A nearby grave also contained Knights, I'm not sure if they are
related: 'Thomas John Knight, D.5/2/1901 aged 38 yrs.', 'Alice Maude Knight,
D.31/12/1901 aged 8 months , infant daughter of the above', 'Elizabeth Amy
Knight, D.6/4/1922 aged 59 years, wife of the above. Dorothy Fall5 stated that Anthony was a wealthy man, who "dabbled
on the Stock Exchange" and travelled abroad. Henry St.John Knight6
wrote to Kate Rosaline Rumble in 1920
stating that, following the death of Letitia, a number of dates were found in
an old diary concerning Anthony and his family. He listed these as follows: 5.12.61: (Anthony & Letitia) left
England for New Zealand per "Victoria" - sailing ship 600 tons;
30.3.62: Arrived New Zealand; 8.3.69: Left New Zealand for England per
"Gothenberg" for Melbourne & "City of Vienna" from
Melbourne; 26.7.69: Arrived in England and went to Leatherhead; 23.2.74: K

school at Arundel & H to Miss Randalls; 16.1.94: Mrs Rumble died;
10.3.95: Elizabeth Knight died. He then wrote: I find the places we went to before settling down at Blackheath are as
follows: 1869 - Leatherhead, Cavendish (s???) & Hastings. 1870 -
Clevedon. 1871 - Ross & Worthing. 1872 - Harefield & Malvern. 1873 -

Blackheath. 21.6.82 - No.2 Vanbrugh Terrace (Blackheath). Anthony and Letitia lived at Vanbrugh Terrace until their deaths. The
1881 census showed that at that time Anthony and Letitia were living at 28
Hyde Gardens, Eastbourne. This was presumably a lodging house as the entry reads: 28 Hyde Gardens: Emma J.Dow, aged 63, Head
of family (Lodging House Keeper), Lydia M.Hemming, aged 53, Boarder, Jane
Johnson, aged 19,(Housemaid,domestic). Also at the same address: Anthony Knight, Head of Family, aged 49,

is gleaned from census records. The 2 April 1871 census showed that James Hochee was then 38 years of
age and living in East End Road,
Finchley, a Northern suburb of London. He was described as a General Practitioner, a member and licentiate of the
Society of Apothecaries, London. The persons present in his house that night

He did not marry but joined the army, changing his surname to
MILTON. The 1881 Census showed that
he was residing at Nortons, Lingfield, the occupants of the house being: Charlotte Hochee (his mother) aged 75; John
E.Milton (son) aged 52 and a retired senior officer in the army; Julia Nigsworth(?) age 35, servant and

|
John died at 33 Wimpole Street, Cavendish Square on 22 April 1883. It
is possible that he took ill suddenly as his last Will and Testament is
dated three days before his death.
The will is very short. In effect he says, "I give everything to my
brother James." One of the witnesses to the will was Elizabeth
Cooper, also of 33 Wimpole Street. It is possible that the solicitor was
summoned to his death-bed for the purpose of making the Will - the truth we
will never know. The index from the English Civil Registration from 1837
shows his death recorded in the parish of Marylebone for the June 1883
quarter, Reference 1a 384. |
Death certificate details |
|
His death certificate for the district of Marylebone, sub district of
Cavendish Square in the County of Middlesex, states that he died on 22 April
1883, at 33 Wimpole Street, being 54 years of age. His occupation was given
as "Gentleman." The cause of death, "Stone in the
bladder - some years. Lithotomy. Pyremia 7 days." |
The cause of death |
|
Lithotomy is the operation for the surgical removal of stones from the
bladder. Pyremia is a form of blood
poisoning, similar to septicćmia. This would support the idea that, being
operated on for the removal of bladder stones, infection set in, so his will
was made quickly when it became evident that he was dying. His brother James
was present at the death. |

mma was the second child and first daughter of the Rev. Edward &

and twelve of the clock Saturday Janry 5th 1811. (She) was married at Newbold
Church by Ebeneza Broughton Leigh on April 12th 1852 to Mr Joseph Majury of
Farmouth. It is interesting to note that Emma was
the eldest of five sisters. She did not marry until she was 41 years of age,
and none of her sisters married before her. Could this be a case where no
daughter was permitted to marry until the eldest married?1
We do not know when Emma died. It is presumed that there were no
